Art and the society
Art and Society
Arts and Entertainment
Art is closely related to entertainment because art itself is already a form of entertainment. Art's, which consists of visual art forms (eg. Paintings and sculptures), music and theatre, main purpose is to communicate ideas and is used as a visual form of expression, which in itself is entertainment. Many resources have been alocated to entertainment and art. For example the Esplanade theatre which is an area specially constructed for the expression of art. In our society art and entertainment can hardly be divorced from one another. For instance when we want to find out about art events it is always located in the entertainment sector of the magazines or newspapers.
Art and business, science and technology
Art can also be a lucrative business. For instance in universities there are art management business courses available. Art can also be see in advertisements for businesses. In the past advertisements were mostly just words trying to convey their messages (eg. Sales, discounts). But now aesthetic 'arty' elements are added into advertisements to attract more customers. For example, photographer David Lachapelle. He often takes shots for fashion magazines, posters and directs advertisements for fashion brands. He makes his works look 'artsy' and different from others, thus collaborating business and art together. Art can also be seen in science and technology. It can be seen in science textbooks for example. Art and technology can also be combined in the form of product design. In the past technology used to be just grey and boring but now it has become more pleasing to the eye so as to attract more people, thus science and technology can be associated with art. Technology can also be used in art. For instance artists like Nam June Paik and Bill Viola who use aspects of technology in their artworks, collaborating both art and technology.
Communcation and media
Art itself is already a form of communication. Art communicates the message the artist wants to say to the viewers. Art forms translates the views and opinions of the artists into a visual form for the public to see. Art and media can also be related. Art often makes use of the media to advertise itself. Art also often makes commentaries about the media. For instance pop artist Andy Warhol who makes prints of popular celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe. He makes commentaries on the life of fame and media.
Art and the disadvantaged and marginalized
People that are marginalised include the poor, ethnic minorities, old and sick. Artists often use the disadvantaged and marginalised as major themes for thier works. They want to bring to light their plight and let people realize the way they live and how they are treated. Examples if artists are Duane Hanson and Dede Eri Supria. Duane Hanson does sculptures of elderly people and shows them as alienated and ignored. He wants to show how the elderly are outcasted. Dede Eri Supria often depicts the slums of Indonesia. he wants to show the impact of modernisation on the poor. He wants to bring to light the plight of the poor people in Indonesia. Thus the disadvantaged and marginalised are often used as subjects for art.
Education and school
Art education is often taught in schools. Society believes that if a young child us taught art from a young age it will cultivate their creative and innovative side. Often it is the rich that are 'educated' in art as art us often seen as something of high society and culture. However in Singapore art is taught in all schools, neighbourhood and private alike. This is important as in destroys the stereotype that art is only for the rich and mighty. By making art more accessible to the general public, it makes it more common and allows more people to associate with it and enjoy it. Thus art education is very important.
Family and home
Artists are often affected by their family conditions and history. For example artist Willem de Kooning because of his abusive mother, he developed a preconcueved notion of women. His works often depicted women as viscious terrible monsters. Another artist that is influenced by their family is Ng Eng Teng. He had a good relationship with his family which resulted in very playful and jubilent artworks. Thus family and home often influence artists in their style and preconcieved notions.
Government and leadership
Artists often have views on their governments and leaders and this is often expressed in their works. For example Andy Warhol who did prints on Mao Ze Dong. It was his way of making a commentary on Mao Ze Dong and communism. Art becomes a form of passive rebellion towards the government. Another artist is Tang Da Wu who did a publicity stunt asking the government for more funds for art. It was a critism towards the government for the lack of interest in the arts. However this is restricted in Singapore where the government has strict rules and regulations where voices are often stilled. Thus artists often express views on government and leaders.
